History

Wizards of the Coast (WotC) was founded by Peter Adkison in 1990. Their headquarters is currently located in Renton, Washington. They initially started off publishing role-playing games, but became known for Magic: The Gathering after hiring Richard Garfield to develop a new game for them which they debuted in 1993. The explosive popularity of the new trading card game resulted in the fast expansion of the comapny. In 1997, WotC bought out TSR, the publishers of Dungeons & Dragons, and added the popular role-playing game to its roster. In 1999 they began publishing the Pokemon Trading Card Game, which also became enormously popular. In 1999 they became a subsidiary of Hasbro, and for the last 20+ have continued to refine, develop, and expand their properties including developing movies and video games based on them.
