Graphic Novels: Literary Award Winners

Overview

Though awards for comic books and graphic novels have been around for decades, the expansion of graphic novels as a form of literature has led to more graphic novels being nominated and winning for other literary awards.

Below you will find graphic novels that have won literary awards across different genres and organizations. You may notice some repeats, both here on the page and from the Comic Award Winners page in this guide

Pulitzer Prize Winners

The Pulitzer Prize is awarded annually in twenty two categories for achievements in the fields of newspapers, magazines, online journalism, literature, and musical composition.

Coretta Scott King Award

The Coretta Scott King Award is an annual award presented by the Ethnic & Multicultural Exchange Round Table of the American Library Association. The award recognizes outstanding books for young adults and children by African Americans that reflect the African American experience.

Michael L Printz Award

The Michael L Printz Award is an annual award given by the American Library Association for the "best book written for teens, based entirely on its literary merit". There is one winner and up to four worthy runners-up may be designated as Honor Books.

National Book Award

The National Book Award is given out annually by the National Book Foundation to celebrate the best literature in America. There are five categories: Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry, Translated Literature, and Young People's Literature. The graphic novels listed below have won for Young People's Literature.

Newbery Medal

The Newbery Medal is an annual literary award given by the Association for Library Services to Children to an author for "most distinguished contributions to American literature for children". One title is awarded as the winner however several runner ups are also selected as "Honor" titles as notable contributions.

Caldecott Medal

The Caldecott Medal is an annual award given by the Association for Library Services to Children for the preceding year's "most distinguished American picture book for children".

Bram Stoker Award Winners

The Bram Stoker Award is presented annually by the Horror Writers Association for superior achievement in dark fantasy and horror writing.

Hugo Award Winners

The Hugo Award is an annual award given at the World Science Fiction Convention where it's members choose the best science fiction and fantasy works from the previous year. It is considered the premier award in the genre of science fiction.
