Seinen manga are targeted towards the demographic of young adult men aged ~18-40, although like other manga demographics they have some crossover readership from the adult categories. Seinen manga first appeared in the manga anthology magazine Weekly Manga Times in 1956. Seinen manga often shares many similarities with shonen manga in terms of its subgenres and themes, but is set apart by involving more mature themes, darker stories, and more graphic depictions of violence and sex. Popular subgenres include fantasy, science-fiction, comedy, and sports.
