Shonen manga are targeted towards the demographic of adolescent boys aged ~9-18, although like other manga demographics they are enjoyed by people of all ages and genders. They first appeared in children's magazines in Japan in the 1900s and eventually in manga anthology magazines in the late 50s to early 60s. One of the most popular of these shonen magazines, Weekly Shonen Jump began publishing in 1968. Shonen manga often features stories that focus on action, adventure, or battling evil or monsters, although comedy, sports, and science-fiction are also popular subgenres.
