Dungeons and Dragons LibGuide: Supplies

A guide to the swords and sorcery tabletop game Dungeons & Dragons.

The amount of supplies you need really depends on you as a player and the type of game you are playing. If your game is mostly online via DnD Beyond and Roll20, you probably just need a notebook, a pen or pencil, and some dice (trust me, you want physical dice because sometimes the digital dice gods hate you). Of course it's also always useful to have something like a player's handbook or your spell cards as well to make finding information faster and easier.

Some people prefer a more traditional approach which includes physical maps and mini figures of characters and creatures. Figure out what works for you as a player in your wider campaign but try not to worry overmuch. Remember: this is supposed to be fun!

Below you'll find notes on vital supplies as well as some optional ones. Many of these supplies are available at the SPSCC Library for borrowing, so be sure to stop by and check them out.

If you want your own supplies, there are a multitude of shops online or you an check out the local shops listed below that are around Thurston County.

Campaign Book

If you are running a campaign created by someone else, you will need the book to help you stay on track with the story. There are books for almost every campaign imaginable, and we have multiple campaign books available in the library (listed in the catalog and under Library Resources on this guide).

Core Rule Books

Necessary for you in your role as the DM. Many online sites that run digital games now have these embedded into them however you should have your own copies for your notes to ensure gameplay proceeds. Having a copy of the Player's handbook at the game is also necessary for your players though it is the only book they are allowed to see.

OPTIONAL Supplies

The Player's Handbook is pretty much required of the person who is the DM but less so for individual players. Most players prefer to have their own copy of the Player's Handbook however it is not necessary for everyone in the party to bring their copy every game. Especially if you are using a website such as DnD Beyond or Roll20, many of the rules and spells are listed on the sites to help you with gameplay. However, some people like to have their own copy so they can flag pages or information they need often, such as information about levels, equipment, or spells.

Character Token/Minifigure

You may or may not need or want a minifigure depending on what type of game you are playing and your own comfort level. Talk to your DM about how gameplay is going to proceed and if you need a figure or token. There are premade minifigures you can buy or you can buy a blank gray one that you can paint to match your character. Websites like Hero Forge (link below) let you design a character from scratch and then they will make it and ship it to you.
