What is a scholarly journal?

Scholarly articles are written by professors and usually undergo a rigorous review process by a committee of their peers before they can be published.

Example would be: Journal of Social Psychology

Traits of scholarly journals:

  • Authors have advanced degrees (PhD preferable, Master's ok too)
  • Usually no color or advertising
  • Technical jargon
  • Lengthy articles
  • Authors cite their sources (list of references)
  • Charts and graphs
  • Purpose is to further knowledge in the field
  • Audience is other scholars

The magazine Psychology Today is NOT a scholarly journal. In fact, no magazine or newspaper is a scholarly peer reviewed journal.
