Spanish language films

Films options:

These films come from the SPSCC Library's database Kanopy. Please do not search around for other films in this database. Each time you click on a new film, the library has to buy it. So these 5 offered below are the only ones from Kanopy that your instructor will accept for extra credit. You'll need to log in with your SPSCC email and password. There is another film database linked below called Films on Demand where you can search and access any film you like.

Machuca -- Plot: Santiago, Chile, 1973: Pedro Machuca is a poor boy of tribal descent, brought into an upper class private school during Chile's brief socialist era. Gonzalo, the well-to-do boy seated a row ahead, befriends Pedro against the bullying will of his classmates. In so doing, he discovers a raw, thrilling but wildly complicated world outside his own previously sheltered homelife. Pedro's fierce, attractive young neighbor Silvana by turns mocks Gonzalo's pampered background, only to fondly lead both boys in a number of kissing games. All around them, Chile drifts towards civil war.

Ixcanul -- Plot: The brilliant debut by Guatemalan filmmaker Jayro Bustamante is a mesmerizing fusion of fact and fable, a dreamlike depiction of the daily lives of Kaqchikel speaking Mayans on a coffee plantation at the base of an active volcano. Immersing us in its characters' customs and beliefs, IXCANUL chronicles with unblinking realism, a disappearing tradition and a disappearing people.

Ma Ma -- Oscar-winner Penelope Cruz delivers the performance of her career as Magda, a woman who is determined to live life to the fullest in the face of her recent breast cancer diagnosis.

Entre Nos -- Newly arrived to New York City and deserted by her husband Gabriel, Mariana must find a way, in a strange city where she barely speaks the language, to provide for her family, financially and emotionally.

Aqui y Alla -- Pedro returns home to a small mountain village in Guerrero, Mexico after years of working in the US. He finds his daughters older, and more distant than he imagined. His wife still has the same smile. Having saved some earnings from two trips to the US, he hopes to now finally make a better life with his family, and even to pursue his dreams on the side by starting a band: Copa Kings. He cherishes the everyday moments with his family.
